Our methods don't change from sector to sector — directional drilling, open-cut excavation, duct bank, and restoration are the same disciplines whether we're getting an electric feeder out of a substation or boring fiber under a state route. What changes is the standard, the material spec, and the inspector. Below is what we self-perform for each market, and the regional programs driving the work.

// 01 — Electric

Distribution, transmission & storm-restoration civil.

Upstate New York's electric distribution and transmission is carried by the region's investor-owned utilities — National Grid across Syracuse, Utica, Oswego, and Watertown; NYSEG, headquartered in Binghamton, across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes; RG&E; and NYPA transmission — alongside PPL Electric, Penelec, and Met-Ed across Pennsylvania. Their duct-bank getaways, manholes, URD conversions, and after-storm restoration go out to prequalified civil subcontractors. That underground scope is what we self-perform.

  • Concrete-encased and direct-bury duct bank, multi-conduit substation getaways, and shared-trench runs.
  • Precast and cast-in-place manholes, vaults, and handholes; transformer and switchgear pads.
  • UG distribution and transmission installation — risers, terminations, and cable-in-conduit to utility standard.
  • Joint-utility trenching — electric, fiber, and other systems set in a single dig.
  • 24/7 storm and emergency restoration — surge crews when the grid takes a hit.

// 02 — Gas

Main replacement, new services & OQ-coordinated tie-ins.

Gas distribution across the region is in a long replacement cycle. National Grid runs a block-by-block gas main replacement program across Upstate New York; Corning Natural Gas maintains hundreds of miles of pipe across the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier; and UGI and Columbia Gas carry large systems through Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania. Aging main comes out and new HDPE and steel goes in — the trench-and-pipe and trenchless scope contractors bid.

  • Main replacement — block-by-block open-cut, bedding, and backfill on active replacement programs.
  • New mains and service laterals in HDPE and steel, tied into the live system.
  • HDD under roads, driveways, and rivers where open-cut isn't an option — the trenchless method gas prefers for crossings.
  • OQ-coordinated tie-ins — we coordinate operator-qualified scope so the connection meets the utility's covered-task requirements.
  • Hydrovac potholing to daylight and expose existing utilities before the bore or trench.

// 03 — Water & Sewer

Water main, gravity sewer & lead service line replacement.

Water and sewer authorities across the region are replacing aging pipe and, increasingly, lead service lines under state and federal mandate. OCWA — the Onondaga County Water Authority — runs continuous water-main and hydrant replacement, and the Mohawk Valley Water Authority is working an active lead service line replacement program across Utica and Rome. Municipal systems and Pennsylvania American Water carry the same work into PA. Public water and sewer is bid to prequalified civil contractors.

  • Water main and force main — installation, replacement, thrust restraint, and pressure testing.
  • Gravity sewer mains and laterals, with grade control and bedding to spec.
  • Lead service line replacement — potholing, excavation, and swap-out on active mandate-driven programs.
  • Hydrant, valve, and service tie-ins to the live distribution system.
  • HDD water and sewer crossings under roads, rail, and waterways.

// 04 — Telecom / Fiber / Broadband

Rural fiber HDD, conduit & hand-hole networks.

Broadband is the fastest-moving market in the region. The ConnectALL initiative in New York and the federal BEAD program are funding a large rural fiber build across both states right now — open-access networks and ISPs like Empire Access, Haefele Connect, Southern Tier Network, and the Oswego County FTTH build are extending middle-mile and last-mile fiber into under-served counties. It's HDD-heavy, road-crossing-heavy work, and because it's federally funded, Davis-Bacon prevailing wage applies.

  • Rural fiber HDD — directional boring of conduit for middle-mile and last-mile routes.
  • Road-crossing bores and potholing to daylight existing utilities along the route.
  • Conduit and innerduct installation, with mandrel/proofing and pull-string.
  • Hand-hole networks and vault sets for splice and access points.
  • Joint-build coordination and Davis-Bacon-compliant execution on federally funded scope.

// 05 — Renewables & Energy Storage

From panel to point of interconnection.

New York's CLCPA target — 70% renewables by 2030 — and the ORES-permitted pipeline of utility-scale solar, wind, and storage are pushing a wave of civil scope into the region. National EPCs and developers building these projects don't keep crews standing by in Central New York. We do — and we build gen-tie, collection-system, and substation civil to the standard the interconnecting utility inspects against.
